The daily newspaper Avgi has close ties with the country's left-wing parties and was therefore banned during the military dictatorship from 1967 to 1974. After 1974 it became the organ of the United Democratic Left (Eda) and the Commmunist Party of Greece (KKE). Avgi is now considered a mouthpiece for the socialist party Syriza.
