De Standaard first went into publication in 1918 as the successor to the Catholic weekly Ons Volk ontwaakt (Our People Awakes). For a long time it played a leading role in the Flemish nationalist movement. Under the then editor-in-chief Peter Vandermeersch, the quality newspaper abandoned the clerical stance and adapted a liberal outlook with a modern layout. A digital evening edition for PCs, tablets and smartphones has also been available since 2012.
