The daily newspaper Diena is Latvia's third most popular newspaper. It was founded at the end of the Soviet era in 1990 and published in both Russian and Latvian until 1999, after which the Russian version was discontinued. In 2008 it was sold to an investor group owned by the Rowland family from Britain. Many journalists who worked for the paper left in protest at the takeover, criticising a lack of transparency. Diena now belongs to the commercial port of Riga and is struggling with declining sales. It subscriptions dropped by 70 percent in 2013.
