Magyar Hírlap was a pro-government, anti-globalist and patriotic daily newspaper. Since July 2022 it only operates online. At the end of 2004, the Swiss publisher Ringier had to sell Magyar Hírlap because it had also acquired a majority stake in Népszabadság, and owning two daily newspapers at the same time is forbidden in Hungary. The paper was long considered liberal in orientation. In 2005, billionaire Gábor Széles took it over and initiated a shift to the right. Today Magyar Hírlap is regarded as the (at times radical) mouthpiece of the conservative ruling party Fidesz. Due to the unfavourable economic situation, the print edition of the newspaper was suspended indefinitely in July 2022.
