This state-operated news agency was founded shortly after the opening of the Eastern Front of World War II in 1941, under the aegis of the Soviet Information Bureau. In 2001 it launched a news website that was eventually published in nine language versions. In 2013, Ria Novosti was integrated into the newly created state media holding Rossiya Segodnya. The language versions were abandoned in favour of the new multimedia platform sputniknews.com.
