Adevărul (The Truth) was launched at the end of 1989 to replace Scînteia, the newspaper of the Romanian Communist Party. Initially the paper supported the National Salvation Front, which was made up of representatives of the "nomenclatura", but the editors now position themselves on the centre-right. It has been owned since 2012 by Romanian media entrepreneur Cristian Burci, who is under investigation for embezzlement, tax evasion and money laundering. The newspaper's website features a blog portal where, similar to the Huffington Post model, writers of every political stripe post commentaries and analyses. In September 2017, the print edition returned to the original broadsheet format that had been abandoned a decade before, on the grounds that readers tend to associate broadsheet newspapers with quality journalism.
