Der Freitag was established in 1990 as an East-West weekly newspaper in an amalgamation of the Ostberliner Sonntag (1946) and the Volkszeitung. Jakob Augstein bought the paper in 2008 and as its publisher and, since 2013, editor-in-chief reshaped it into a leftwing opinion paper, boosting the online edition through active reader participation. In 2018, Der Freitag received the "European Newspaper of the Year 2018" award in the weekly newspaper category as part of the 20th European Newspaper Awards.
