The Bulgarian service of the German international broadcaster Deutsche Welle went on air for the first time in 1963. Even though listening to foreign programmes was a punishable offence in Bulgaria, which at the time was under communist rule, Deutsche Welle became an important voice for freedom there. The renowned Bulgarian journalist and translator Alexander Andreev took over as the station's editor-in-chief in 2008. Since 2012 Deutsche Welle's Bulgarian service has only been available online. Opinion articles from Deutsche Welle are often reprinted in other Bulgarian media outlets.
