The daily newspaper Diena is Latvia's third most popular newspaper. It was founded at the end of the Soviet era in 1990 and published in both Russian and Latvian until 1999, after which the Russian version was discontinued. In 2008 it was sold to an investor group owned by the Rowland family from Britain. Many journalists who worked for the paper left in protest at the takeover, criticising a lack of transparency. For several years Diena belonged to the commercial port of Riga . In 2022, Estonian businessman Mait Laidvee acquired a 52-percent stake in the publishing company Dienas bizness. Editor-in-chief Gatis Madžinš and Latvian media entrepreneur Edgars Kots each own 24 percent of the shares. Like many Latvian print media, Diena is struggling with a declining circulation.
