Established in 1975, Eleftherotypia was the first daily newspaper founded after the end of the military dictatorship. Initially it was owned by its editors but was later taken over by Christos Tegopoulos, a well-known resistance fighter during the country's occupation by Nazi Germany. In December 2011 the publisher went bankrupt and the newspaper was forced to close down. At the start of 2013 it went into circulation again, only to be closed down once more in November 2014 owing to financial problems.
