Élet és Irodalom is an opposition weekly newspaper mainly read by left-wing and liberal intellectuals. In the 1980s its sales rose to 120,000 copies. After the fall of communism in 1989 the paper struggled financially owing to its falling circulation. Its contributors include renowned authors, intellectuals and scientists from Hungary's left-wing camp. The culture section features stories and poems every week. At the moment, the articles on the newspaper's website can be accessed free of charge after viewing ads.
