El Mundo was founded in 1989 with the goal of becoming the leading paper for the conservative section of Spanish society. It differs from its competitor, the traditional newspaper ABC, in that it provides more critical, frequently polemic commentary, and as a result it has frequently been accused of partisan journalism. It belongs to the Italian RCS MediaGroup (Corriere della Sera).
