El Periódico de Catalunya was founded as a modern centre-left regional paper during the transition to democracy in 1978 and over the years has a gained broader national importance. It appears in Catalan and Spanish. Since around 2016 its editorial line has changed from moderate support to clearly distancing itself from the separatist movement. In 2019, the highly indebted company was bought by the Prensa Ibérica publishing group. Many editors were fired.
