Ethnos was founded in 1981, the first Greek newspaper to be printed in tabloid format. It was closely aligned with the socialist Pasok party, which came to power in the same year. With its modern layout it soon supplanted Ta Nea as the country's most widely read newspaper. The newspaper is owned by the Greek-Russian businessman and owner of the PAOK Thessaloniki soccer team, Ivan Savvidis, who bought it in the summer of 2017.
