Founded in 1992, Evenimentul Zilei (Event of the Day) was Romania's first tabloid newspaper. Its main focus was gossip and political scandals. Initially it was one of the country's leading newspapers. In the mid-1990s the founders of the paper withdrew and the daily was relaunched as a serious paper, but its circulation figures plunged. In 1998 the German company Gruner + Jahr took over the newspaper and then sold it to the Swiss media company Ringier in 2003. A sharp drop in circulation prompted the latter to sell it in 2010. It is currently owned by political consultant and journalist Dan Andronic, who was sentenced to three years probation in 2020. Called EVZ for short, the paper is known for interest-driven reporting and for backing whoever is financing the paper. This means that its ideological orientation is quite changeable. At the beginning of 2020, EVZ ended its print edition and switched to online-only for cost reasons.
