Founded in 1992, Evenimentul Zilei (Event of the Day) was Romania's first tabloid newspaper. Its main focus was gossip and political scandals. Initially it was one of the country's leading newspapers. In the mid-1990s the founders of the paper withdrew and the daily was relaunched as a serious paper, but its circulation figures plunged. In 1998 the German company Gruner + Jahr took over the newspaper and then sold it to the Swiss media company Ringier in 2003. A sharp drop in turnover prompted the latter to sell it in 2010. The political consultant Dan Andronic, who is under an ongoing investigation, currently holds the majority stake. Evenimentul Zilei - EVZ for short - is known for interest-driven reporting and tends to back whoever is financing the paper, with the result that its ideological orientation can change very quickly. After the daily circulation dropped to 7,000 copies, Andronic discontinued the print edition for cost reasons. Since early 2020, the EVZ is only available online.
