The liberal regional paper St. Galler Tagblatt was first published in 1839 under the name Tagblatt der Stadt St. Gallen und der Kantone St. Gallen und Appenzell. It shortened its name to St. Galler Tagblatt in 1910. By taking over several smaller papers in the 1960s and 1970s it became the best-selling daily in eastern Switzerland. The Neue Zürcher Zeitung media group has been the paper's majority shareholder since 1989. Its Tagblatt Medien Holding AG publishes several other daily papers with the same content in eastern Switzerland, including the Thurgauer Zeitung, the Appenzeller Zeitung and the Toggenburger Tagblatt. Since 2018 these publications have been part of CH Media, a joint venture between the NZZ media group and AZ Medien.
