The daily newspaper Gândul (The Thought] was founded in 2005 when some of the editors of the Adevărul newspaper fell out with its publisher over political issues. Gândul committed to a centre-left stance. At first the editors tried to finance the newspaper on their own but in 2006 it was acquired by Romanian media mogul Adrian Sârbu, and from then on was owned his company Mediafax Group. In July 2015 several senior members of the editing staff resigned. No official explanation was given for their decision but there were reports of differences of opinion within the company. Sârbu has been on trial since 2016 for tax evasion at Mediafax Group involving millions of euros. Since April 2011 Gândul's content has been published online only. At the end of 2019, Sârbu sold the newspaper to entrepreneur Radu Ioan Budeanu. Since April 2011, the content of Gândul is only available online.
