The daily newspaper Gândul (The Thought] was founded in 2005 when some of the editors of Adevărul newspaper fell out with its publisher over political issues. At first the editors tried to finance the newspaper on their own, but in 2006 it was acquired by Romanian media mogul Adrian Sârbu and became part of his Mediafax Group. In July 2015 several senior members of the editorial staff resigned. No official explanation was given for their decision, but there were reports of differences of opinion within the company. Sârbu has been under investigation for years for tax evasion and money laundering. At the end of 2019, Sârbu sold Gândul to the millionaire entrepreneur Radu Ioan Budeanu, who was given a suspended sentence in a bribery scandal in 2020. In 2011 Gândul ended its print version and has since published all its content online. In 2020 the website began broadcasting live interviews in the evenings.
