In the past this regional paper was closely linked - also financially - to the Centre Party. It severed its political ties with the party in the 1990s, having previously also cut its financial ties. IIkka's editing department cooperates with several regional papers, some of which belong to other media companies. Since early 2020, Ilkka was merged with Pohjalainen. Ilkka-Pohjalainen emerged from the fusion of the regional newspapers Ilkka and Pohjalainen at the beginning of 2020. Ilkka was founded in 1906 and there were periods during which is was closely linked to the Centre Party, also financially. Politically, Ilkka broke away from the Centre Party in the 1990s, from which it had already decoupled economically. Pohjalainen was orignially founded under the name Vaasa in 1903, three years before Ilkka, and kept that name until 1984. Initially it had close ties to the conservative National Coalition Party.
