Birgün is a socialist daily newspaper and critical of the government. It was founded in 2004 by a group of Turkish intellectuals and is supported by trade unions, the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects engineer and the socialist parties. It is known for being independent of large companies but for this same reason it struggles with distribution and advertising problems. Its editors are facing a slew of lawsuits.
