The daily newspaper Kıbrıs has the highest circulation by far in Northern Cyprus. It was founded in 1989 by the Turkish Cypriot businessman Asil Nadir whose Kıbrıs Media Group also owns a radio station and television channel. His publications have supported various political parties in the unrecognised Repulic of Northern Cyprus. Kıbrıs himself was sentenced to ten years in prison in 2012 for embezzling millions from the British conglomerate Polly Peck.
