De Correspondent was launched in 2013 by the well-known Dutch journalist Rob Wijnberg. Many prominent authors contribute articles according to the slogan: "More context for the world". A special feature of De Correspondent is that it was set up through crowdfunding. Users can access the content for an annual subscription of 70 euros, and the website is also funded by donations. This financing model aims to guarantee independence and keep the site free of ads. Subscribers can also comment on the articles and discuss them with the authors and other readers. In 2019 De Correspondent started an English-language edition, also financed through crowdfunding. However, the promise that the editorial team would settle in New York turned out to be false. This led to severe criticism by much of its readership and donors.
