Index is one of Hunary's leading news portals. Its investigative journalism uncovered several scandals in the past. Alongside TV broadcaster RTL Hungary it was long considered one of the last independent heavyweights in the country's journalistic landscape. In 2018 it was acquired by the Magyar Fejlődésért Alapítvány foundation, which owns most of Hungary's pro-government media. In addition, since 2020 the advertising space on the website has been marketed by the company owned by pro-government entrepreneur Miklós Vaszily. As a result of conflicts between the management and the editorial board over proposals for changes that would influence Index's editorial processes, the management dismissed editor-in-chief Szabolcs Dull. This was followed by the resignation of around 90 percent of the journalists working for the outlet. Since then there has been more explicitly pro-government content on the website.
