Ir is the successor paper of Cita diena (Another Day). The latter was founded in 2008 by former employees of the daily newspaper Diena who left the paper in protest at its takeover by the Rowland family from England. In 2010 the daily newspaper Cita diena was relaunched as the weekly paper Ir. It has developed into a successful news outlet and with around 70,000 readers per week it now has a higher circulation than Latvia's most popular daily, Diena. As a joint-stock company Ir is owned by several Latvian businessmen none of whom holds a majority share. An agreement has been signed between the editorial board and the owners guaranteeing editorial independence.
