The Irish Independent is Ireland's largest daily newspaper and the flagship of Mediahuis Ireland, formerly Independent News and Media group, which owns around two-thirds of all Irish dailies. The group's dominant position draws a lot of criticism. The Independent group was acquired by the Belgian Mediahuis group in 2019. Circulation of the right-wing populist Independent has been in steady decline since 2007. In December 2022, the media group's main printing plant ceased operations and in March 2023 further job cuts were announced at the Mediahuis newsrooms in Ireland. A paywall for premium online content has been in place since the end of 2019.
