Until 1994 Kainuun Sanomat, a regional paper, was closely aligned with the liberal Centre Party, but it has been independent ever since. Kainuun Sanomat aims to strengthen its regional identity and in this way set itself apart from the capital's media. In 2015 the paper dropped its Sunday edition to cut costs, and now runs from Monday to Saturday only.
