Founded in 1919, Kathimerini supported the transitional government led by Ioannis Metaxas in 1936, who established himself as dictator in that same year. Nevertheless, the paper remained resistant to the oppressive regimes during the German occupation in World War II and during the dictatorship from 1967 to 1974. The newspaper has a long tradition of backing the conservative Nea Demokratia party, but nowadays also publishes left-leaning commentaries. Its publishing company has been listed on the stock market since 2000. It also has several international editions.
