Keskisuomalainen, Finland's oldest Finnish-language newspaper, was first published in 1918 under the name Keski-Suomi. In 1986 it declared political independence and severed its ties to the Centre Party, but it still generally supports the party today. Its influence is limited to its area of distribution, central Finland. However Keskisuomalainen also works closely with the regional papers Ilkka, Karjalainen, Pohjalainen and Savon Sanomat, with which it jointly designs Sunday edition pages and shares a foreign affairs department.
