The daily newspaper La Provence was created in 1997 from a merger of the regional papers Le Provençal and Le Méridional and is distributed in Marseille and the Provence. In 2013 the paper was bought by the controversial entrepreneur Bernard Tapie, who has been prosecuted for breach of trust and corruption. La Provence also owns the free paper Marseille Plus. After several crisis-ridden years under the ownership of controversial entrepreneur Bernard Tapie, the regional newspaper was bought by the Marseille-based shipping magnate Rodolphe Saadé in 2022.
