The US banker James T. Bates founded the daily newspaper La Tribune de Genève in 1879. After its main competitor La Suisse went bankrupt in 1994 it became the leading daily paper in French-speaking Switzerland. The Zurich-based media company Tamedia took over the regional newspaper in 2011 and has since axed jobs on several occasions. La Tribune de Genève is a founding member of the Leading European Newspaper Alliance (Lena).
