Founded before Latvia gained independence, Lauku avīze (The Rural Newspaper) was renamed Latvijas avīze in 2003. It is the number two paper on the Latvian market and the most popular newspaper published in Latvian. It mostly deals with issues affecting rural Latvia - problems in the agricultural sector feature prominently. Latvijas avīze's stance is decidedly national conservative. It appears on weekdays and is published by Lauku Avīze. Entrepreneur Viesturs Serdāns has a 32 percent stake. He occasionally attends editorial meetings and has a say in the paper's editorial policy. Latvijas avīze is the only paper published in Latvian that still makes a profit. It sells aroung 15,000 copies a days, making it Latvia's top-selling newspaper.
