The business paper Les Echos was founded as a monthly newspaper in 1880 by French journalist Emile Servan-Schreiber and his brother Robert under the name Les Echos de l’Exportation. It did not become a daily paper until 1908, when it was also given its current name. Les Echos belongs to the luxury goods conglomerate LVMH. The paper's editors are demanding stronger editorial independence guarantees from the company. In 2007 it launched what is generally considered to be the world's first ever fee-based online paper.
