The political and cultural weekly Magyar Narancs (abbreviated to MaNcs) was founded in 1989 by young intellectuals with close ties to the Alliance of Young Democrats (Fidesz), which at the time had liberal views but is now the national conservative ruling party. In the summer of 1990 the paper severed its ties with Fidesz. Nowadays the weekly is situated on the left of the political spectrum. Magyar Narancs introduced a journalistic style that was completely new to Hungary: ironic, candid and informal in its language.
