The online magazine Mediapart was founded in 2008 by four journalists, among them Edwy Plenel, former editor-in-chief of Le Monde. Mediapart has built a reputation for investigative journalism. Among other scandals, in 2019 exposed the embezzlement of funds by Environment Minister François de Rugy. Mediapart is financed by a growing number of fee-based subscriptions and donations.
