Metro was Sweden's first major free newspaper and was distributed to commuters in the metro, on trains and on buses. Based in London, the Metro International group which used to publish the paper has developed this concept worldwide. Metro had established itself on the market despite fierce competition, particularly from the tabloids, and was regarded as politically independent. The commentary section mainly featured pieces by prominent public figures who were not on the paper's editing team. In 2014 the production of the newspaper was taken over by the private Swedish news agency TT. The edition in Sweden was discontinued in August 2019 due to its decreasing reach.
