Milliyet is an established newspaper with a popular website. Founded in 1950, it was long considered the only social-democratic Kemalist quality newspaper. Its editor-in-chief Abdi İpekçi was murdered in 1979 by Mehmet Ali Ağca, who later tried to assassinate the pope. In the same year Milliyet was sold to Doğan Holding and then in 2012 to the Demirören Holding conglomerate. Many journalists who were critical of the government have been fired by the paper since then.
