Milliyet is an established newspaper with a popular website. Founded in 1950, it was long considered the only social-democratic Kemalist quality newspaper. Its editor-in-chief Abdi İpekçi was murdered in 1979 by Mehmet Ali Ağca, who also tried to assassinate the pope some time later. In the same year Milliyet was sold to Doğan Holding and then in 2012 to the Demirören Holding conglomerate. Since then, many journalists who were critical of the government have been fired and the paper has adopted a pro-government stance.
