Novi list is Croatia's oldest newspaper. It is published in the Rijeka area and is the region's most important paper. During the first wave of privatisations in the midst of the Yugoslav Wars in the early 1990s the editors and employees managed to secure majority stakes in the paper for a few years. That taste of editorial freedom still ensures Novi list's political independence today - despite the paper having changed hands several times over the years. Novi list was taken over by Slovakian company JOJ Media House in mid-2016.
