The tabloid Õhtuleht was published for the first time in 1944, immediately after the withdrawal of the German Wehrmacht and passed into the hands of the Ekspress Grupp once Estonia achieved independence. For some years now it has been under 50/50 ownership by the Ekspress Grupp and AS Alexela, an energy company. It focuses on classic tabloid content, but since around the beginning of 2019 it has featured more and more high-quality political analyses and its online subscriptions have increased.
