Protagon was co-founded by journalist Stavros Theodorakis, who established the neo-liberal To Potami party in 2014 and secured over six percent in the European elections in the same year. Theodorakis left Protagon in spring 2014. The website features opinion pieces, analyses and reportages on politics, business, society and culture. It is known for being popular among intellectuals.
