Süddeutsche Zeitung is Germany's most popular subscription newspaper. It was one of the first leading quality newspapers to discontinue its online comments function, replacing it with an opinion forum in order to deter trolls and raise the quality of debate. Together with public broadcaster NDR, the SZ founded an investigative research network in 2011, which WDR also joined in 2014. The Süddeutsche Zeitung made headlines in 2016 when together with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists it published its research on the Panama Papers. In 2017 the paper was awarded the Pulitzer Prize.
