Sözcü is an independent Kemalist nationalist daily with a very critical stance vis-à-vis the government. After its launch in 2007 its circulation rose rapidly, today it is the highest-circulation paper in Turkey. It has also been available in Germany since March 2014. Various lawsuits are pending against the newspaper for supporting terrorism, the betrayal of state secrets or insulting the president. The owner of the paper, Burak Akbay, and editor-in-chief Metin Yılmaz are among the accused.
