Der Spiegel is the weekly magazine with the highest circulation in Germany. Its exposure of political scandals and the Spiegel affair of 1962, when the paper was accused of high treason after publishing an article about West Germany's national defence forces, further secured its reputation. According to an editorial statute all information published must be rigorously checked by its own documentation department. In 2018, however, it emerged that Claas Relotius, a longtime Spiegel reporter, had manipulated many of his reportages over the years without the magazine ever realising it.
