Star was founded in 1999 by the Uzan group, at that time one of the largest conglomerates in Turkey. In 2004 the newspaper was seized by the government. After changing hands several times it was owned for several years by pharmaceutical entrepreneur Ethem Sancak, who has close ties to the AKP government. He sold the paper in 2017 to businessman Hasan Yeşildağ. Star has only appeared digitally since 2020. It is regarded as the mouthpiece of the government, like the Akşam newspaper, which is also part of the Türk Medya Group, and the Kanal 24 television station.
