TagesWoche was founded in 2011 by former editors of the Basler Zeitung who resigned because of a shift to the right at that paper. TagesWoche's declared goal is to broaden the spectrum of opinion in Basel. In 2018, the TagesWoche was discontinued due to dwindling income after it had already taken austerity measures in mid-2017. Up until then it was published daily online and once a week as a print edition. Although it originally intended to be a national paper its coverage focused on the city of Basel and the surrounding region.
