Taraf was a liberal paper owned by the brothers Başar and Savaş Arslan. After its launch in 2007 it quickly became the country's most important investigative media outlet. Initially its reporting was favourable towards the AKP government but it later became very critical of the government. On 27 July 2016 it was closed down per government decree. Its ex-editor-in-chief Ahmet Altan was arrested in September 2016 and convicted of complicity in the attempted coup of 15 July 2016, for which he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
