The liberal-conservative daily was founded by a consortium to compete with the dominant Times of Malta, but it has never managed to attract nearly as many readers. The Independent has a pro-European stance, a number of regularly contributing columnists and a Sunday edition. Unlike the Times of Malta online content is free.
