Founded in 2012 under the name Vesti through a merger of the two Russian-language newspapers Vesti segodnja and Chas, this daily newspaper changed its name to Segodnya in 2017. It has close ties to the pro-Russian party Saskaņa (Harmony). In both foreign and domestic policy it supports the official Russian position towards the Baltic states and is consequently very popular among the Russian-speaking segment of the population. In the summer of 2020, the media subsidies which Segodņa and the BB.lv webside received from the media crisis fund were cancelled on the grounds that the two outlets had spread disinformation according to intelligence agency reports.
