Former journalists of the centre-left daily Libération founded the news site Rue89 in 2007. Its name refers to the French Revolution of 1789 and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. In 2011 it was bought by the publishing house of the centre-left news magazine Nouvel Observateur, which was purchased by the Le Monde group in 2014. Rue89's content was downsized and it now runs as a section of the L'Obs website focussing on the digital revolution.
