The nationalist daily Akşam was founded in 1918. Its founder and publisher Necmettin Sadak was said to have had ties to Nazi Germany. After several changes of ownership, Akşam and the newspaper Star were sold in 2017 to businessman Hasan Yeşildağ, who has close ties to President Recep Tayip Erdoğan.
