The nationalist daily Akşam was founded in 1918. Its founder and publisher Necmettin Sadak was said to have had ties to Nazi Germany. After several changes of ownership, Akşam and the paper Star 2017 were sold to businessman Hasan Yeşildağ, who is said to have close ties to President Recep Tayip Erdoğan.
