The web portal OdaTV was founded in Istanbul in 2007 by two journalists Cüneyt Özdemir and Soner Yalçın and was critical of the government from the outset. In 2011, in the course of the Ergenekon investigations Soner Yalçın and three other OdaTV editors were arrested and their homes were searched. They were accused belonging to the secret Ergenekon group and of a breach of secrecy. The prize-winning OdaTV investigative journalist Nedim Şener was later arrested and held in custody for a year, but was acquitted in 2015. In February 2020, several employees were arrested again and the website was temporarily blocked.
