Etelä-Saimaa was founded in 1885 under the name Lappeenrannan Uutiset and - after temporary closure and rebranding - has been published under its current name since 1914. In the inter-war period it spoke out vehemently against all forms of radicalism. After World War II and until the 1990s it remained close to the Centre Party, whose voter base is concentrated in rural areas.
